NIGHTWISH Drummer Says The Songwriting Process Is Easier This Time Around

October 12, 2003

Finland's NIGHTWISH have begun the final preparations for the recording of their new album, tentatively due in June 2004 through Spinefarm Records. The group have launched a studio diary via their web site where they will keep their fans updated on the progress of the recording sessions for the follow-up to 2002's double platinum (in Finland) "Century Child" effort.

The following is NIGHTWISH drummer Jukka Nevalainen's first diary entry, dated October 6-10, 2003:

"It's my turn to reveal something from the depths of the studio and so it will be. I have worked with the songs for three days now with [keyboardist] Tuomas [Holopainen] and [guitarist] Emppu [Vuorinen] and now we have 10 songs more or less ready to be recorded for the demo. Tomorrow we'll have a day off and we'll let our brains recover from the information-flood until we'll continue on Sunday. Working the songs seems a bit easier than with 'Century Child' even though songs are more complicated and there's much more hooks included. It must be that our skills are improved or our standards of judgment are totally wrong. You can decide after the album is released. Today I also got back my snare which was left in Switzerland (READ: Which was left in Switzerland by my dear friend… =) ) on our shows in August. We almost had to pay customs for getting it back because when [Spinefarm Records'] Ewo went to pick it up some guy told him we'd have to pay customs because snare is coming outside EU. Luckily Ewo talked things through and we didn't need to pay because I've already paid once for this piece or metal…"

As previously reported, NIGHTWISH will enter the studio on October 27 to begin recording the new album. The band will once again use their own studio (Caverock) in Kitee to record the drums, bass and keyboards/synths, while the vocals and guitars will be recorded at Helsinki's Finnvox facility. The group hope to complete the recordings by the end of March 2004 and launch a world tour in support of the album next summer.
